Box 155Great Cacapon, WV 25422~/Jecf?tdede/@uftlThe AME MajorArcana Series XCOPYRIGHT BY AME 1993It is common for an audience to becomeamazed and awed at the antics of theMentalist. But when an audience of magiciansand mentalists is amazed at the performance onstage, you know you have something to conjurewith.Such a thing happened at the Collector'sWork Shop Convention, at Bethesda, Md. last April29th to May 2nd.A Mentalist competing with magicians won firstprize! Probably for the first time. Secondly CountAnthony from Madrid performed his show, unsolicited!First to a small group which soon grew to a largecrowd. The Count did hisQ &A Test which he does very well.Butwhat amazed the Mentalists was his dramatic opening effect. TheCount makes a fast entrance holding a felt-tip pen and a smallclipboard that holds a few blank cards. He then writes a numberon the top card on the clipboard and points to anyone to callouta number from 1 to 100. Immediately he turns the clipboard overto show the same number and then scales the card into theaudience. This is repeated a second and third time, very fast. What amazed the Mentalists was that the numbers on the cardswere written in ink!The lines making the numerals were thickand large like if writen with a felt tip pen!l/tb/bmThe Count spent the nextthree days at the AME estatebuttalkingdoingnothingMentalism. There is nothing new aboutink-writing Swamis, These havebeen around for years BUT readon.THE GREAT REVELATION.Ido not get impressed easily. One time I spent an evening atthe home of a Mentalist whospoke for hours about his worldshaking Mentaleffects.Atthe end of the evening I hadlearnednothingandhadforgotten his talk as fast asI heard it.I considered hismentalism "hanky-panky."Forthese were magic tricks donewith sticks and small tags, etc.THE COUNTANTHONY BLAKE OF MADRIDOn the other hand what Count Anthony revealed to me in theprivacy of my den appeared to me as a gift from the Gods. TheCount showed me his Swami gimmick that clipped unto his thumbnail, a tiny thing hardly noticeable. Then he said, "My Swamigimmick replenishes its own ink automatically!"My head swooned.- - "What did you say?" I asked. He repeated,"My Swami gimmickis always ready for it replenishes its own ink automatically."I was stunned! I do not believe it,thought I.But theCount was kind enough to reveal his great secret. He took fromhis pocket what I choose to call "The Sacred Ink Well," for wantof a better name. This was nothing more than a desk ink pad. (Avery cleverly prepared ink pad that only a Mentalist had needfor.) ·After each show the Count simply takes his thumb writer andplaces it into the ink padand closes it and the gimmickinstantly absorbs ink from the pad and is ready for the next show! The Count claims that he invented this method all by hislonely self and that no one else in the world knows about it. Tobe honest I found this unbelievable. There must be some one elsewho knows this ruse, thought I. So after the Count left, I calledsome well informed Swami fans and asked them about it. All saidthey had never heard of it.In fact one fan almost threw thephone at me."There is no such thing." he screamed. Here follows, with the Counts permission, the details on howthe reader can prepare his own Sacred Ink Well.To my knowledge,it appears in print for the first time!2THE COUNT'S GIMMICK is a thumb nail clip-on Swami.Fig. 1.It is made by a jeweler of non-corrosivemetal.The Count says that the ink contains an acidthat will eat up the metal unless it is non-corrosive.The tip of a felt tip pen is cut off and then insertedinto the Swami in place of the pencil lead.~VFig. ITHE SACRED INK WELL. For this you will need an ink pad. Dueto the many popular rubber-stamp games for children, ink padscome in many sizes and shapes. These are sold at stationery anddollar novelty stores.I bought one that looks like a smallbottle two inches high and had an ink pad the size of a dime. Thereader should choose his own size. Here I will describe the inkpad used by Count Anthony. The ink pad is square and measures 3 by 4 inches and is halfan inch thick. The ink sponge in the pad must be sealed bycovering it with a piece of thick but flexible polyethylene filmor any thick soft plastic material.Let Fig. 2 represent the pieceof plastic to cover the ink sponge. This piece should be the size of theink pad 3 by 4 inches.Next drilla tiny hole in the center of thecovering as shown by the arrow inFig.2. The hole must be a hairsmaller than the diameter of thefelt tip that will be used. Now ifyou stick the point of the felt tipof your swami into the tiny hole, itshouldfitsnugglyand remainanchored in place.•Fig. 2andinkandinktheNext place the plastic sheet covering over the ink spongesealed it with a good strong adhesive tape all around.Thesponge in your ink pad is now sealed, except for the tiny holeafter the swami is inserted into the tiny hole,no amount ofshould leak out of it so that it can be safely carried inpocket or brief case.NOW! When you stick the felt tip of your swami into the tinyhole and close the ink pad box, your swami will replenish its ownink supply by capillary action!Automatically, of course, whileyou enjoy some Columbian coffee! The ink pad box is kept closed by encircling it with rubberbands. That will keep the swami under pressure and in place andready for the next show!THE CLIBOARD.The clipboard used3is not as innocentas itmay look for it too is part of the conspiracy. The clipboard usedby the Count is cleverly designed for the sole purpose of assitingin the writing with the swami on the right thumb tip. Please note Fig.3.This shows a smallclipboard measuring about 3 by 4 inches, just largeenough to hold four or five blank cards which areused to write the numbers on. Fig. 3 shows the backof the clipboard which has a piece of material thatsticks out perpendicular to the board.Whenholding the clipboard in the palm of the righthand, the material that sticks out is held betweenthe first and second fingers of the right hand. That frees the rightthumb for the writing!Clever? Of course! The back of the clipboard iscovered with felt material.THE LONG WRITERS.The Long Writers, Fig.4,were first writen up in Phanta Graphs (early 1981).These were declared pipe dreams by the critics. Inspite of that two models were made that I know about.I made a crude model which worked but I did not havea workable or practical ink well so I shelved it.Ray Piatt made one and said it was the greatestgimmick ever. Ray had no patience for writing withthe long writer so he also shelved it.Actually, writing with the long writers is mosteasy after a bit of practice. All that is needed isto learn to write numbers zero to nine. But now with the secret of the Sacred Ink Well, the Long Writers will come of age. All you need isto stick the business end of the Long Writer into thehole of the ink well and tie the whole thing withrubber bands and carry it in your brief case and youare ready to do miracles.Fig. 3?.Fig. 4There it is Gentlemen. You got to admit that here is onefabulous secret. If you are the type of Mentalist that loves todazzled your audiences silly, this is for you. What person in hisright mind is going to believe that you have a tiny almostinvisible tool that writes like a felt tip pen? The Count claimsthat he can write 57 characters, numbers or letters before hisswami runs dry!To replenish the ink in the well, the Count uses a hypodermicneedle.4
